In 1950, the late Hank Greenspun purchased the Las Vegas Sun and made it the most influential newspaper in the state. Today, his legacy lives on as the Greenspun Family Foundation continues to graciously give back to the Las Vegas community it helped build. Led by his wife Barbara, director of the foundation, and son Brian, president and editor of the Las Vegas Sun, the foundation remains dedicated to supporting those who strive to improve our community. Founded in 1989 with the intention of pursuing the family's philanthropic endeavors, the Greenspun name is firmly associated with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas because of the family's many generous gifts and active involvement on campus. The Greenspun Family Foundation supports both the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs and the Hank Greenspun School of Communications, as well as many other community initiatives. The Greenspun School of Communications enhances the quality of life in the region through a progressive educational curriculum, applied research efforts, media production projects, and important community outreach programs. The Greenspun Family Foundation and the Greenspun companies continue to provide important support for these university programs, as well as the programs in the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs, to which they pledged $9.7 million for the construction of a new facility.
In addition to generous gifts to the Greenspun School of Communications and Greenspun College of Urban Affairs, the Greenspun Family Foundation and Barbara Greenspun have also contributed to scholarship funds for UNLV students. Through their vision and aspirations for UNLV, the Greenspun family and their affiliated companies have helped position the university as a major provider of educational services for the community and the region.
